Std BoxSelection allows you to select objects in the 3D view by dragging a box.

Use Std BoxElementSelection if you want to select only the vertices of an object, and Part BoxSelection if you want to select only the faces.

Go to the menu Edit → Box selection.
Drag the box from left to right to only select the objects completely inside the box.
Drag the box from right to left to also select objects touching or crossing the border of the box.
