Summary | 0002071: Create new document at start up
Description | I like this feature found under Preferences -> General -> Document tab but it should behave different. If the feature is checked and FreeCAD starts it should open new document as it does now. If .fcstd file is selected and opened in FreeCAD in my opinion FreeCAD should not create new document as that is not intended outcome user is after!

Isn't it what already happens now? |
If mentioned option is selected in preferences ATM new document is created if: 1.) User starts FreeCAD by clicking on FreeCAD application icon. 2.) User clicks on .fcstd file and the file is opened in FreeCAD. What in my opinion should happen is: 1.) The same behaviour as we have it now. 2.) New document should not be created when opening .fcstd file. |
For example Gedit will: - Open empty document if Gedit was launched from application menu. - Will not open empty document if it was launched by opening text document. FreeCAD is a bit different as default behaviour is to open Start WB. I am guessing if another WB is pre-selected under preferences it would make sense to always open empty document if FreeCAD is launched from application menu. But i don't have a strong opinion on this second part. But about opening empty document when FreeCAD is started by opening .fcstd file in my opinion that should not happen regardless of if Create new document at start up is set to on/off. |
Actually Create new document at start up preference could be removed altogether and this could be default behaviour: - Don't open empty document if Start WB is default WB or FreeCAD is launched by opening .fcstd file. - Open empty document if launching FreeCAD from application menu (and Start WB isn't default WB). If i missed any scenario where it makes sense not to have this default behaviour there could still be option inside Preferences to Never create empty document at start up. Anyway this is my personal opinion what makes more sense and if developers disagree feel free to close this report. Cheers. |

Any consensus on this ? |
Tested with FreeCAD 0.19 and it works as expected. |
