Round Robin DNS is a load balancing technique that distributes incoming traffic across multiple servers. Instead of pointing a domain to a single IP address, it's configured with multiple A records, each pointing to different server IPs. When users access your website, DNS servers rotate through these IP addresses in sequential order, effectively spreading requests.

This method provides basic traffic distribution without requiring expensive hardware load balancers. For example, if you have three web servers with IPs 192.0.2.1, 192.0.2.2, and 192.0.2.3, Round Robin DNS would:

• First request: Directs to 192.0.2.1
• Second request: Directs to 192.0.2.2
• Third request: Directs to 192.0.2.3
• Fourth request: Cycles back to 192.0.2.1

While Round Robin DNS improves resource utilization and provides simple redundancy, it has limitations. It doesn't consider server health, current load, or connection speed. If one server fails, DNS will still direct traffic to it, potentially causing service interruptions. For this reason, it's often used with health checks or monitoring systems.

Common applications include distributing web traffic, balancing mail servers, and managing FTP servers. For optimal performance, combine Round Robin DNS with other techniques like geographic DNS or implement a dedicated load balancer for more intelligent traffic management.
