Summary0002745: The Disappearing Grid
DescriptionAfter doing certain selections, the sketching grid, on the surface of an object can not be seen.
Forum discussion thread: https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20557
Steps To Reproduce1) Open FC
2) Click on the Edit menu then Preferences
3) Click on the Reset button then Yes - the diologue will close?
4) Open Preferences again.
5) Click on Display
6) In 3D Navigator chose Blender.
7) Click Apply then Ok

FC is now configured similar to my setup.

8) Select the Part Design WB then Select 'Create an empty document'
9) Select 'Create a new sketch' - a dialog box named 'Choose orientation'? will be displayed.
10) Select XY-Plane then OK
11) Draw a large rectangle and then Close
12) Select the Pad tool then OK
13) DO NOT select any plane on the object and select 'Create a new sketch'
14) Select OK
15) The grid will not be visible on the surface of the object as it is on the XY-plane which is coincident with the back face of the object. You can rotate the object a bit to verify this.
16) Press Close and the grid will disappear
17) Press the # 2 key to reorientate the face square-on again
18) Select the front face - it should be the only face that you can see.
19) Select 'Create a new face' again - again the grid will be invisible on the surface of the object - as though it was still on the XY-plane (i.e. behind the face you selected) but if the object is rotated slightly it will be seen that it is now really on the face selected. However, now, whenever the sketch plane (and therefore also the object surface) is normal to the screen the grid can not be seen.

Incidentally, I am getting replies to my reports explaining that there are work-arounds for them. Although I am grateful for their ideas, it is my view that work-arounds should not be necessary and my reason for reporting bugs is to help to make a great (free) program, built by some remarkable people, even greater.

Hello

1) Please explain to me how to start a thread. Is it the same as ‘Report issue’? Is it ‘Tools>New post’? Is it ‘Tools>Your posts’.

2) I can not find anything in my account or the forum which states ‘Start New Thread’.

3) I do not understand why I should start a new thread.

It may seem obvious to you but it is not at all obvious to me how to do this.

I confirm this issue on both 0.16 and current master.

Although for step 15, I do not consider this to be a bug. It is up to the user to either hide the Pad, or switch the draw style (View menu) to wireframe to be able to see through the Pad.

I do agree that step 19 is definitely a bug, the grid should be visible when the sketch is mapped on top of the solid.

But after further testing I see further issues here:
* At first when entering sketch edit mode, the grid is not visible.
* Now select a sketch tool like Circle, and create a circle on the top face, then terminate the command with a right-click.
* Hover the mouse pointer over the circle's centre point: the grid appears, but it disappears as soon as the pointer moves away.
* If the centre point is preselected, the grid remains visible; it disappears as soon as the point is deselected.
* With the centre point preselected, click on the point, hold the left mouse button and drag to move the circle: the grid disappears; release the left mouse button, the centre point still preselected, the grid reappears.
* This seems unpredictable: after creating two new files in the same manner, I can no longer reproduce the issue.

This is not about PartDesign, it's about the Sketcher workbench. Moving the report to the correct project.
